Deputy Team Lead

The International Rescue Committee is hiring a Deputy Team Lead to oversee a major humanitarian program in Sudan, with the project running from October 2026 for 2.5 years. This senior position carries primary responsibility for supervising, supporting, and mentoring program sector technical leads across Health, Nutrition, WASH, Food Security and Livelihoods, Protection, and Education. The Deputy Team Lead ensures technical coherence across all program components and steps in for the Team Lead when they are absent. The IRC has a long history in Sudan. It operated there from 1981 to 2009, then re-registered in November 2019 and opened a main office in Khartoum, with programming beginning in 2020. In 2024, the organization expanded into non-SAF-controlled regions of Darfur and South Kordofan. It is currently active in Al Jazeera, White Nile, Gedaref, River Nile, Blue Nile, South Kordofan, West Darfur, Central Darfur, and North Darfur states, including a satellite office in Tunaydbah in Gedaref. The IRC's focus is on vulnerable individuals affected by conflict and crisis, including women, children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, refugees, mixed populations, and host communities. The context is dire. Since war broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, violence has continued for nearly two and a half years, displacing over 12 million people across all 18 states. More than 30 million people now require humanitarian assistance, and around 25 million face acute food insecurity, including 770,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Damage to infrastructure, supply shortages, and restricted humanitarian access continue to hinder the response. The IRC has scaled up its efforts despite these immense challenges, supporting Sudanese communities both within the country and across national borders. The IRC itself was founded in 1933 at the call of Albert Einstein and is one of the world's largest international humanitarian organizations, working in more than 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities. Its mission is to help people survive, reclaim control of their future, and strengthen their communities. Working in Sudan means operating in one of the most complex humanitarian environments on earth. The security situation is volatile, access is restricted, and the needs are staggering. This role is not for someone looking for a standard desk job. It demands adaptability, resilience, and a genuine commitment to locally led, demand-driven humanitarian action. The successful candidate will build the capacity of Sudanese partner organizations and put local partners and communities at the center of the response.
