About this opportunity
Opportunity Overview
The Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares (CNIC) in Madrid, Spain, is hiring a staff scientist to lead research in muscle stem cell biology and genome editing technologies. The position carries the reference code 26-110_SS_AR and focuses on understanding how muscle stem cells function and how cutting-edge genome editing tools can be applied to study and potentially treat muscle diseases. CNIC is one of Europe's leading cardiovascular research centers, funded by the Spanish government and the Carlos III Health Institute. It operates a modern facility in Madrid with advanced core units for genomics, microscopy, bioinformatics, and animal models. The center collaborates with hospitals and universities across Spain and internationally, and its scientists regularly publish in top-tier journals. Working here means access to state-of-the-art equipment and a highly collaborative environment where basic biology meets clinical translation. Madrid offers a vibrant research ecosystem with a relatively low cost of living compared to other Western European capitals. A typical studio apartment in the city center rents for around 900 to 1,100 euros per month, while dining out and public transport remain affordable. The city enjoys a dry, sunny climate with hot summers and mild winters. Spain's national health system provides high-quality care, and researchers from EU countries can work without a visa. Non-EU applicants will need a work permit, which CNIC typically sponsors for successful candidates. This role suits a scientist with a strong background in molecular biology, stem cell research, and genome editing. You will design and execute experiments, supervise junior researchers, and contribute to the lab's strategic direction. The position offers a chance to shape an independent research line within a well-funded institute.
